At the June meeting we had an interesting talk by Wade Usé about
shaving many years ago when you needed a kettle to heat some water, some
soap, a dish or mug for the soap and water, a straight razor and a strop
(leather strap to sharpen your razor). He told us that the reason most
men in those days had beards was a direct result of the amount of time
it took just to prepare to shave. Phil told us about the project to reprint
some of the quarterlies and books and told us to let Jess know if there
are any books we are interested in seeing reprinted.
Please, please Help!!!
Collating the Summer issue of the Quarterly
will take place at the North Branch Library at 12:00 noon, Thursday, July
29, 1999
DEATHS
We wish to extend the heartfelt sympathy of
all the members of the society to Marlene Beauvais Folse on the death of
her husband, Hodges ("Deedie") A. Folse, Sr. Marlene is a long-time member
of TGS, sharing her good humor, knowledge and recipes with other members.
Hodges was a member, too, and will be remembered for his sharing of his
knowledge of the history of the area. He is survived by two sons, Hodges
"Deedie" A. Folse, Jr., and Emile Folse; four daughters, Mary Beth Plair,
Susan Folse, Theresa Aguillard and Molly Windwehen; four brothers, Harold,
Sr., Clayton, Gatewood "Pott" and Reed Folse; three sisters, Leonelle "Nan"
Melancon, Helen Zerangue and Zefa Penisson; and 11 grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Emile and Serelia Bourgeois Folse; and
one daughter, Frances Cagle. He was a Korean War Marine veteran, a member
of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and past commandant Bayou Parish Detachment
of Marine Corps League.
BOOKS
Good news, folks. The TGS Executive Board
decided to allow discounts for the reprints of the quarterly. Remember
to work on that article you have been meaning to send in for publication
in the next quarterly. And how about that couple you have been trying to
locate? Send your query in before October 1 for inclusion in the Winter
issue, and be sure to give everything you know about them--all known dates
and locations, even variations in spelling, if known.
More good news: Dorotha Horvath, our Genealogy
Librarian, has purchased $6000 worth of new books for the Genealogy Dept.
of the North Branch Library. And that is only part of her allotment. However,
they haven't all come in yet. It won't be long before the Genealogy section
will be bursting at the seams. But the Terrebonne Parish Library Board
is planning ahead, this time. Dorotha is helping to plan the NEW Main Branch
near the Civic Center (with unlimited parking). It is really going to be
something else, folks.
Watch for the pre-publication offer for Marcie
and Essie Cavalier's new book on the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic
Church History & Cemetery. They have been wearing out several
sets of tires going back and forth to Donaldsonville reading inscriptions,
checking records, making maps and taking pictures for this one. Just like
all of their work, it is quality material.
If you have any new information or corrections
on the Generations I & II books which we published a
good many years ago, please send these to Jess Bergeron (address above)
for possible inclusion in a revised edition of these books. That would
be dates of birth, death, or marriage of the persons mentioned therein.
I can't remember if this was ever brought
up, so please forgive me if I am rehashing old news. Anyway, some of our
members may be wondering about this as I was. Remember the book They
Came, They Stayed by Laïse Ledet? We asked for a count of
the members who were interested in a revised edition. Well, we found out
that those who were interested really wanted the pictures that were included
in a special section in the back. That presents a problem. At the time
that book was printed, we didn't know about things like digital imaging,
pixels, dpi (dots per inch) and scanning. We did the best we could with
what we had. And what we had was photocopy machines (also commonly known
as Xerox machines). Well, the copy of a copy of a copy of a copy did not
come out too clear, you know. It was fine if that is all you had, but when
we look at it, today, we would like to have the original photos so we could
scan them. We don't have them. They were returned to their original owners,
who may have lost track of them, or worse. Hence we don't want to do anything
that we would not be proud of. We hope you understand.
